Electrical requirements for the 120, and 240 volt spas

    Siemens Breaker

    SquareD breaker
Spa and hot tub electrical requirements: 120 volt 20 Amp, or 240 volt 50 Amp. What is right for you?

120 volt 20 Amp is commonly available on a standard porch outlet. This is adequate to run spall spas that are typically designed to hold 2 or 3 people. The advantage to using an existing standard circuit is that it saves the additional expense of a 240 volt 50 amp circuit that can be in the range of $500 to have added from your electrical panel. The disadvantage of the 120 volt circuit is that it is limited to 20 amps and can't run the spa on high speed and the heater at the same time. It also takes 4 times as long to heat up the water. This is why the low power option is mostly used for small spas.

Facts about 120 Volt, 20 Amp spas

    • They heat the water only on low pump speed, when the pump is switched to high to heater is turned off.
    • They heat to 104 maximum temperature but require 6 to 8 hours to reach maximum temperature.
    • They are limited to the following equipment: one, 1.5 HP pump and one, 1 HP blower, spa  light,  controls, and ozone water treatment or bromine generator.
    • They typically will cool down a couple of degrees as bathers use the spa and the pump is run on high speed. This can be prevented by switching the pump back to low speed where the heating will resume.

Facts about 240 Volt, 50 Amp spas
    • They heat the water on low or high pump speed.
    • They heat to 104 maximum temperature but require only 2 hours to reach maximum temperature.
    • They are limited to the following equipment: 2, 4 HP pumps and one, 1 HP blower, spa  light,  controls, and ozone water treatment or bromine generator.
    •   They typically  will not cool down as bathers use the spa.
    • The additional pump power and heating capacity with allow for both bigger spas, more bathers and spa jets.

Most 120 volt spas can also be wired 240 volt. This can be done at any time after installation. There are a few control settings that will need to be change that will enable the maximum heat capacity on high pump speed. Any spa that is 120Volt 240 convertible, can be used with either voltage.

What you will need to provide, prior to delivery of your new spa.

    240 Volt:

Requires 220Volt electrical installed by the customer or his electrician before delivery. In order to make the final connections to the spa, the installer will  require: Flex conduit with wire installed with sufficient length to reach the furthest most side of the spa, approximately 14 feet. The wire gauge must be sized for 50 amps (4 Wire) with a quick disconnect installed on the wall to code. All spas, will require GFCI install in the electrical panel. Failure to have the electrical installed and ready for the Izzi installer will result in a delivery fee.

    110 volt:

This Spa requires 120 Volt, 20 Amp electrical outlet installed by the customer or his electrician before delivery in order to make the final connections to the spa.  The spa outlet cannot be on a shared circuit with any other devices and it must have a dedicated 20 amp circuit breaker. The spa comes with a 12 foot GFCI  cord so it will need to be within 5 feet of the receptacle in order for the cord to reach. The outlet wire gauge and breaker must be sized for 20 amps.  Failure to have the electrical installed and ready for the Izzi installer will result in an additional service fee for the return visit.
